FIAT/IFTA has chosen “Making it Real – Keeping it Real” as the theme of the 2010 World Conference. Keeping up with the rapid pace of change in Audiovisual media creation and dissemination has meant that audiovisual archives have had to re-invent the wheel many times. However the fundamental principles that underlined audiovisual archiving in the analogue world still hold true – but there are new ways, new opportunities and new avenues to pursue in the digital and internet era and new economic challenges to keep the wheels in motion.

The Challenge of “Making it Real – Keeping it Real” is about selling the true benefit and value of the “archive /asset management function” and garnering the support and funding to achieve what the profession does best…, but with a new twist – not just as keepers but as publishers, sellers, buyers, technologists and much more. We will bring real experiences and case studies to the conference for discussion.

L’Institut Beaton (Beaton Institute), et son prédécesseur Cap Bretoniana, a servi les archives régionales du Cap-Breton au cours des 50 dernières années. L’Institut Beaton recueille et préserve la vie sociale, économique, histoire politique et culturelle de l’île et favorise la recherche liée au Cap-Breton – sa population, son industrie, son histoire et son riche patrimoine culturel.

Il ya cinquante ans, avant la technologie numérique, le paysage de l’information était tout à fait différent, mais il ne fut pas sans défis. Mère Sainte-Marguerite d’Écosse (Soeur Margaret Beaton), dans son rôle de bibliothécaire à Xavier Junior College, a reconnu que de nombreux documents d’importance historique et littéraire au Cap-Breton ont été perdus en raison de la négligence et l’absence d’un dépôt approprié. Dans une réponse proactive à ce défi Soeur Beaton a commencé à recueillir des documents et des artefacts liés à l’objectif de préserver des matériaux d’importance historique pour les futurs chercheurs.

Tout a commencé en 1957 avec l’acquisition du premier manuscrit – Le Procès-verbal de la première réunion agricole au Cap-Breton. Aujourd’hui, l’Institut Beaton est reconnu dans la communauté d’archives comme ayant une riche collection régionale, y compris: 3.000 collections de manuscrits, 60.000 images, 2500 enregistrements sonores, 1.500 cassettes vidéo et bobines de films, 1500 livres de référence, 2.000 cartes et plans.En 1966, Soeur Margaret a tourné son attention à la construction du Cap Bretoniana et le Collège des Archives du Cap-Breton. Cap Bretoniana a augmenté considérablement au cours de ces années avec plusieurs appels à la communauté locale pour le don de documents d’archives. En conséquence, le besoin permanent d’espace supplémentaire pour les archives, d’abord logé dans la bibliothèque puis dans le Pavillon des arts de la rue George MacDonald à Sydney, suivi d’un déménagement vers le bâtiment sur la rue Nepean MacLeod en 1967, puis au bâtiment à Logue rues George et Pitt en 1970.En 1975, le Cap-Bretoniana a été élargie pour inclure deux divisions principales: les Archives et Bibliothèque de l’Institut, et la Division des études ethniques, le folklore et l’histoire sociale et culturelle de l’île du Cap Breton. Dans la même année, les Archives ont été frappé par la mort subite de Soeur Beaton à la suite d’un accident de voiture. La direction des Archives a été prise par le Dr Malcolm MacLellan en titre intérimaire jusqu’à la nomination du Dr Robert Morgan à titre de directeur permanent et archiviste. Les Archives publiques ont été renommées, l’Institut Beaton, en l’honneur de sa fondatrice.En 1979, l’Institut, avec le reste du campus de Sydney, a déménagé à son nouvel emplacement sur la route de Grand Lake. C’est grâce à leur collection que l’Institut Beaton sert ceux qui sont en quête de la connaissance – l’élève, l’enseignant, le réalisateur, l’auteur, le généalogiste, la communauté. La collection offre aux chercheurs une fenêtre qui permet de comprendre, comparer, analyser et éduquer aujourd’hui par la compréhension et la connaissance de leur passé.  L’Institut Beaton depuis 50 ans s’est efforcé de préserver et de mettre à la disposition les matériaux qui ont une valeur durable pour leur société.

The Carpenter Center is the home of the Harvard Film Archive

HFA was founded in 1979 by Robert Gardner and his colleagues in Harvard’s Department of Visual and Environmental. It first opened on March 16, 1979 with a screening of the silent film Lady Windermere’s Fan by Ernst Lubitsch.

 The Harvard Film Archive (HFA) is a film archive devoted to cinema located in Cambridge, Massachusettes. With a collection of over 9000 films and related documents, and regularly screens films in its 210 seat theater. It also  has a film conservation center near Central Square, Cambridge.

 The archive’s first curator was Vlada K. Petric, who expanded the collection and established the year-round regular screenings. He retired in 1995 and in 1999 Bruce Jenkins assumed the post. In January 2005, Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences dean William C. Kirby announced that the archive would be absorbed by the Harvard College Library and managed by the Library of Fine Arts. This caused some concern within the Harvard community about the future of the archive and its programming. Jenkins resigned soon after the announcement.

In September 2006 film scholar Haden Guest became the new director of the archive. He has calmed fears that the archives’ absorption in the Library would affect its public film screenings.

 It is part of the archive’s mission to screen films, however, since film is perishable, regular showings take their toll on the film stock itself. Therefore, conserving and preserving the collection’s prints has also become an important focus.

In 1903 four brothers;  Hirch Moses, Abraham, Schmuel and Itzhak Wonsal or Wonskolaser opened their first movie theater in New Castle, Pennsylvania.  This site is now named the Cascade Center, a shopping, dining and entertainment complex honoring their heritage. Four brothers whose parents emigrated from Poland to Ontario, Canada in 1892.
